The Sun and the Moon

1

Once upon a time, there was a mother who lived with her two children, an older brother and a younger sister. The mother worked hard every day to support her family. One day, she went to the market to sell rice cakes. On her way back home, she encountered a hungry tiger.

The tiger said, “If you don’t want me to eat you, give me the rice cakes you’re carrying.”

Frightened, the mother gave some of her rice cakes to the tiger. But the tiger wasn’t satisfied and kept asking for more until all the rice cakes were gone. Even after she gave all the rice cakes, the tiger didn’t let her go and eventually ate the mother.

After devouring the mother, the tiger put on her clothes and disguised itself to visit her children. When it arrived at their house, the tiger, disguised as the mother, knocked on the door.

The children heard the knock and asked, “Mother, is that really you?”

The tiger tried to imitate the mother’s voice, but the children sensed something strange. They asked to see their mother’s hand through the door. When they saw the tiger’s big, hairy hand, they realized it was not their mother, but a tiger!

Frightened, the children ran away and climbed a tall tree. The tiger tried to follow them but couldn’t climb the tree. So, the tiger asked the gods for a rope to help it climb. Meanwhile, the children prayed to the gods for help. Hearing their prayers, the gods gave the tiger a weak rope. As the tiger climbed the rope, it snapped, and the tiger fell to its death.

After that, the gods lifted the children to the sky. The brother became the moon, and the sister became the sun. However, the sister was scared to be in the dark sky at night, so they switched places. From then on, the brother became the moon, and the sister became the sun.

(Korean Version)
